“To The Family of Richard Pegue ... MAY TIME HEAL YOUR SORROW ... MAY FRIENDS EASE YOUR PAIN
MAY PEACE REPLACE HEARTACHE ... WARMEST MEMORIES REMAIN

A true professional back in the day until the present.  When you think of those "OLDIES BUT GOODIES" you thought of the old dusty record master. I'm a dusty record lover and a collector of dusties dating back to the 50's.  Thought I had everything in my library of oldies, but I would listen to Richard on Friday nights from nine until five and he would play songs that I had never heard of, they would blow me away, especially one tune that I loved, called "FRIDAY NIGHTS" By the recording artist "SAM FLETCHER. You could listen to his broadcast all night, and still want to hear more, his was indeed the "BEST MUSIC OF YOUR LIFE" he always took you on a walk down memory lane, I always referred to his music as "A BLAST FROM THE PAST".  He will be greatly missed.  At His next Dusty Record Convention he will have special guest, his Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.  Take care.  May the caring and concern of family and friends sustain in your time of grief.”

“I want to offer my deepest sympathies and regrets for the loss of Richard. He was an incredibly talented individual. I had the honor of listening to his unique brand of communications and in my opinion superior radio show for years, before joining the crew to help him in producing it. I did this with Richard, Najilah, DC, Junior, Steve and a host of other fun characters for over 3 years. We had a blast and it was like a party every week, thanks to the flowing champagne (Richard preferred Cook's) and Wallace Catfish Corner's ribs, fish and chicken! My responsibilities were to bring in birth and death dates, I also provided information on how songs charted on the Billboard charts and dates when songs were released. I would help keep up with the winners of contests, sometimes work the computer and just help add stability for everybody involved. Of course, he had me vote regularly for Smokey and the Miracles when asked (I won't even mention that other group). As much as I appreciated what Richard did on the radio as a fan, I had even more respect for what he was and what he represented as a showman, after spending time as a crew member. I loved working for Richard! I love working with my co-workers there. I loved the way he would acknowledge me on the air occasionally. It was sincere and heartfelt. I loved Richard Pegue!!!

The Dusty Record Convention was my Christmas as an adult. I would anxiously await for it to come, so that I could intermingle with my friends that I had developed there and they were numerous. Once before I really became acquainted with Richard, I had him come down to speak to a group of boys in a mentoring program that I was involved with. They didn't know him from Adam, so it was interesting to hear him try to describe who he was and what he did. When I speak to people about Richard and his overwhelming gifts, it is difficult for me to do so without sounding like a groupie. And the impact that he has had in his journey here on this planet, will never be quite articulated, but I saw him close upfront for years and I will tell you he was one hell of a man and the best radio talent I have witnessed in my lifetime!”

“Streetwise magazine; I'm the Director of Distribution/Vendor Service for Streetwise. Richard’s passing is a great loss for the Streetwise family. Richard truly loved and cared about all the vendors who sell the magazine.  He dedicated his God given talent to communicate to the masses.  Reading Richard’s column was like listening to his voice over the airwaves.  A personal loss for myself as a child growing up in Chicago in the 1970's on 72nd and Evans, known as the (DEADEND KIDS), one block  North of Richard’s childhood  home of 73rd & Evans.  Television was 2nd to radio in my life in those days; long drives with my mother in her "73" Buick Wildcat listening to WVON, the man in the speakers became a part of your life on a DAILY basis.  When introduced to Richard by Mr. Shannon, I couldn’t believe this unique distinct voice I grew up with, was standing in my office right before me.  I pitched the idea of Richard contributing an article which turned into a 2 1/2 year weekly column ,which I honored and was very proud to have someone of his stature not only contribute his experience of the history of the Chicago music scene , but also a true member of the NEW Streetwise FAMILY.”

“To the family and friends of Richard Pegue, There are not enough words to express my appreciation to Richard for his friendship and his help. Without Richard, I would not have had a career in broadcasting. From traffic reporting (first at WJPC, then WGCI) to Saturday morning broadcasting, to talk hosting (first at WGCI, then at WVON), Richard's encouragement and advocacy made it possible for me to live my dream. When I moved from broadcast to marketing and public relations, Richard was there too, teaching me about that business and helping me to stretch some really tiny advertising budgets. He was a friend and a mentor. And, it sounds like a cliche, but I will miss him very, very much. Richard, thank you for everything you've done for me. I appreciate you so very, very much. Rather than nurse my broken heart, I'm going to do something Richard-like, I'm going to invest time and energy in the dreams of other young people who believe in radio and help them live their dreams. To the family, thank you for sharing Richard with the world. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Sincerely, Brenda Montgomery”

“Back in somewhere around 1976 or '77...I first listened to Richard Pegue & the "Best Music Of Your Life" on WJPC am station, when I was only 9 or 10 yrs old. He used to come on every Sunday & he would just make my day! The week would not seem to be complete without hearing him on the radio. He used to have the game "Name That Tune" & it would help challenge my knowledge of the 'dusties' as I was quite knowledgeable at that tender age. Because I was so young I couldn't go to the "Dusty Record Convention" that I only dreamed about...until I finally went in Nov.2005! In the 80's I listened to Mr. Pegue on WGCI (both am & fm), & I followed him thru the years (in the late 90's) as he played the 'dusties' on WVON, and (from 2005-until Sat. nite before last) on WKKC. I attended the last "Dusty Record Convention" in Nov. 2008, and I never will forget winning the tickets on the radio & picking them up from Mr. Pegue at the 'Senior Citizen Center' on 79th/Stony...down from the Regal Theater. About 23-years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Pegue at the WGCI studio...late one Saturday night as he was spinnin' the 'dusties'. His assistant, Sherl Jackson (an old friend of the family), she knew how I loved Mr. Pegue & his music so much....and, she introduced him to me (at the time a 17 yr old aspiring to be like him!), and I remember staying in the studio asking questions & jammin' with Sherl & Mr. Pegue from 12midnight 'til about 4am (then, I couldn't take no more jammin!). Mr. Richard Pegue has brought so much sunshine to so many people....and, I will NEVER-EVER FORGET HIM for as long as I may live! Radio has just gotten a lot less interesting now. Rest in peace, my buddy.... The LORD has spoken unto you & said: "Well done, thou GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT!" (Matthew 25:21) Your friend, Glynn Hall (faithful listener since 1977).”

“I have been deeply saddened by the passing of Richard Pegue.  Yesterday I received a phone call from Jackson Park Hospital wanting to know if I knew him. The lady who called me said he had my card in his pocket and that was the only contact information they had.  She also said Richard was found in his car unresponsive and they brought him to Jackson Park.  She said at that time the doctors were working on him.  To say the least, I was surprised to find out he had my card on his person.  My relationship with Richard was directly connected to his relationship with my son, Big Ed from Houston, TX.  They talked on to each other on the radio.  Even though they never met in person, Ed considered Richard his friend.  I met Richard at the Atlas Center and saw him again at the last Dusty Record Convention.  I took pictures of Ed to Richard so he could place a face to the voice. I cannot express the deep sadness I feel at his passing.  I am praying for him and his family.  I listened to his radio show, and the couple times I met him, I found him to be a most gracious person.  I am sorry I didn't get a chance to know him better. Sincerely,  Doria M. Scott”

“Richard Pegue's passing touches me in a way that I can't describe.  I began listening to Richard when I was a pre-teen and now I'm in my 50's.  Although I wasn't consistent in recent years (career, family, etc.), every time I came across him, it was a joy!  The irony is that he came to mind a few weeks back and I took a moment to drop him an e-mail.  Richard was an institution in Chicago and will certainly be missed.”

“Condolences to the Pegue family and the dustie record family who has lost a great one today. I heard the news and had to pull over to gather myself. Man, Richard was my guy. He was a mentor to me. I didn't know him personally but met him a few times. I learned a lot about playing dusties and music in general from him. He was truly passionate about his music as I am. Besides Richard, Herb and Raggman, I'm probably at the top of the list with them when it comes to the dusties.  My heart and prayers go out to the family. The convention won't be the same. Hopefully it will continue in his memory. God bless you Richard.”

“May The Lord Bless And Keep You, Richard: So very long ago you saved my life, Richard. I was a girl when conditions became impossible for me to continue living in my parents' house. All I had to survive on was a waitress salary and tips at Flo's Restaurant to pay for a closet-size room at the YMCA. Life was horrible at home but the YMCA was horrible and scary, too. It was your voice on the radio that made things better.  It was only a transistor radio but I was able to get through many a night by listening to you. No one else in the world cared who or where I was. But you noticed I was the waitress who worked downstairs at Flo's. You lectured me for being a young girl living at the YMCA instead of at home. It was me who started you saying, "Well, well, well" and "my, my, my" on your programs. Those were my special words and I always said them to my customers and to you when I wrote those many, many, "book-size" letters to you about everything. I used to tease you all the time and once in a while I would really tick you off when I went too far. But you forgave me and remained my friend for 30+ years. I was 19 yrs. old when I first met you.  I am 55 yrs. old now. You gave me the "Best Music of My Life." Your voice on the radio was a special gift and all that I had to relate to for so many years. I loved you for that back then and even though I moved on in these last few years, I have never forgotten that it was you who pulled me through the hardest years of my life. All of the people in my life knew I adored you. Goodbye, Richard Earl Pegue, Jr. I will truly miss you. P.S. Please put in a good word to God for me. I know He was the one who put you into my life for so many years. He sent you to help me.  And, you did.”

“My heart is so heavy with the news of Richard Pegue's passing.  I spent many Saturday nights listening to Richard play the dusties.  I was lucky enough to call and speak to him once and try to explain how important he had been to my life.
In the early eighties, I was going through a very difficult time in my life and one of the only ways that I got through it was by turning my radio on every Saturday night and knowing that for the next several hours I was not alone.
Bless you Richard and thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

“My deepest sympathy and prayers to the Pegue Family. Richard was my favorite radio personality.  I would pick up my girlfriends on Saturday night and we would go to my sister’s house on the north side, sit up all night listening to the best music of our lives. On Tuesday's we would go to Lil's, sit on the Temptations side and live in the past. I used to get on Richard because I baked him a birthday cake in 1995 and let him take it home in my tupperware cake plate, which he promised to return but never did. My two girlfriends have passed on but my sister and I will truly miss a GREAT MAN. There can never be another Richard Pegue.”

Richard had a one of a kind style of how he played dusties that will never be duplicated. I thank God our paths crossed. Chicago has lost an icon in the radio business. I'm blessed to have received my PhD in Dustyology from Richard Pegue. He has passed the torch and I will do my part to keep the best music of your life alive and well. Was Richard Pegue also one of the Electric Crazy People-featuring Rudolph Browner? I also remember one of his characters-The Gym Shoe Creeper!  I loved singing the Gym Shoe Creeper theme song. Anyhow, his kind made radio absolute fun to listen to.  His kind of presentation will never be heard from again.  I am also concerned that stroke, heart disease, and Vascular Disease is affecting Black Americans starting in their mid fifties through about age 70!”

“On behalf of the staff and participants of the Atlas Senior Center, I would like to express our condolences to the Pegue family.  Richard had become a major part of our activities, and he was considered to be an Atlas Family member.  Every Monday, Richard without fail, would share his love for music, the history of music and entertainment news with our seniors.  They thoroughly enjoyed and eagerly awaited Mondays so they could dance, win prizes (of course) and hear the voice of a man who had become a broadcast icon.  He did it lovingly and unselfishly.  May you find comfort during these days.  Richard is now with his Creator, and we are sure he would report back the essence of the 84th Psalm -- "How Lovely is Your Dweling Plan, O Lord Almighty!  My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord."  Blessings, The Atlas Senior Center Family”

“I was stunned to hear the news this morning about Richard.  What a giant in the radio business as far as I'm concerned.  No one knew music like Richard.  He turned me on to so much great music I can't even begin to mention.  I first heard him one night (in 1968) when I happened to be babysitting and flipping through channels to listen to some decent music and I caught him by accident and never again touched that dial all night long.  He blew me away with what he was playin, especially when I heard for the first time At Last by Etta James, that's the first time I can honestly say I dug slow music, up until then I'd always change the station.  I got the chance to meet Richard as well as we became great music friends.  I met Marie Henderson of Out of the Past Records through Richard and she is one of my very best friends.  Thanks Richard for all the great music you played and turned everyone onto to.  You will be greatly missed.  No one did it better than you!!”

This morning when I learned that he passed away, my heart was broken.  Though he was ill, you just thought he could live forever.  His dulcet tones and quick wit will be sorely missed.  Chicago has lost a True radio legend who blessed us with his gifts behind the scenes and on the air.  God knew best and though his physical presence will be missed, we will have memories that will last a life time.  My sincerest condolences to the family.
